Strawberry Margarita with Homemade Strawberry Syrup

Last year, a few months into lock down, my friend Caroline texted me and said “I’m bringing something over! On the way now!” I had spent the morning cleaning the house from top to bottom and was so happy to see my friend (albeit from the driveway since we were being socially distant!).
She left a strawberry margarita on my porch, we did an “air hug”, chatted quickly, and then she drove off. It was such a treat!
Since then, especially when strawberries are in season, I’ve enjoyed making my own strawberry syrup and making as close to what she made me as possible.

Strawberry Margarita // makes 1 drink

1.5 oz Grand Marnier
2 oz Tequila
3 oz lime juice 4 oz fresh strawberry simple syrup*
salt and a lime wedge for the rim
Run lime along rim of glass then dip in salt. You can also use sugar here but I prefer salt. Pour liquids into cup, stir, and top with ice! Garnish with strawberries and/or lime.

*After making a few batches, I’ve deduced the most simple and flavorful way to make strawberry syrup. Wash and quarter 1 lb of strawberries and place in a pot. Pour 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar over the top, stir to mix, then bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn down to a simmer and allow to simmer for 15 minutes.
