Red lips have long been a universal symbol of power, confidence and femininity; throughout the last 100 years they've symbolised the progression of women's equality and have embodied everything we associate with being a #GirlBoss. I never feel as ready to face the day than I do when I pop on a slick of red lipstick, and never feel more confident than when I step out with a power pout - but until now I've never really thought about why. An early advocate of women's rights and cosmetic icon, Elizabeth Arden famously helped to shape some of the most historically memorable moments with a slick of that red lipstick, and her work continues to this very day. Ms Arden provided red lipsticks to the suffragettes marching on New York's Fifth Avenue in 1912, with the red lips they sported being known from thereon as an icon of female power; she continued this support of women by working with the Armed Forces during WW2 to provide women with a red lipstick as part of their uniform, again cementing the shade as a symbol of power and independence. In 2018 this journey and support of women globally continues, via the #MarchOn campaign fronted by Hollywood mega-babe (and all-round girl crush) Reese Witherspoon.
